What is Botox™?

Botox™ is the generic name given to treatment where Botulinum Toxin is used. Dr Helen, at Linden Cottage Dental Practice in Ashington, may use different brands such as Azzalure™, Botox™, Letybo, and Nuceiva™, that contain Botulinum Toxin. Botulinum Toxin causes muscles to relax as it acts at the junction between the nerves and muscle. In other words this prevents the release of a chemical messenger named acetylcholine from the nerve endings. With precise application, this remarkable formula temporarily relaxes targeted muscles, effectively minimising fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of ageing. Botox can also be used in dental applications to treat the masseter muscle in the jaw to help alleviate symptoms from clenching or grinding, this can also create a slimmer looking jaw. We can use it to lower a high upper lip line to show less gums when you smile (treatment of a gummy smile), to reduce symptoms from migraines, and it can also be used to minimise under arm sweating.

Who can have Botox™ treatment?

Botox™ is a relatively safe treatment that has been around for many years. It does not react with many different medications. One of the main risks, as with any treatment with injections, would be bleeding or bruising. This side effects can be more likely if you take medication such as Aspirin, Clopidogrel or Apixaban.

You would not be able to have Botox™ treatment due to the following reasons:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Allergies to eggs or lactose (present in SOME formulations)

  • Current infection at the injection sites

  • Allergies to the Botulinum Toxin molecule

  • Auto-immune conditions (Discuss with your practitioner)

  • Use may be limited if you have a bleeding disorder

  • If you currently take an Aminoglycoside antibiotic (Amikacin, Gentamicin, Neomycin Sulfate, Streptomycin and Tobramycin)

  • It is prohibited in significant neurological conditions including, but not limited to: Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lambert-Eaton SYndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson’s.
